AI Overviews Now Appear on 83% of Branded Searches: What Business Owners Should Do
Ahrefs found that Google AI Overviews appeared on 82.91% of U.S. desktop branded searches by September 29, 2026, up from 61.3% in July. When customers search your company name, they may now read a Google-written summary before seeing your website. Audit what it says and fix the sources it cites.
What Changed in September 2026
Ahrefs published the study on October 2, 2026. It reviewed 232.8 million U.S. desktop Google results from July through September, including 92.5 million for branded keywords (searches that include a company name). AI Overviews showed up on 61.3% of branded results in July, 65.1% in August, and 73.3% in September. By September 29, the figure reached 82.91%.
Non-branded searches, such as “marketing agency near me,” rose more slowly, from 73.5% to 78.3%. The gap between the two shrank from 12.2 points to 5 points in three months. Google now summarizes searches for a company name almost as often as it summarizes everything else.
Timeline: How Fast This Happened
In Ahrefs’ November 2025 study, branded queries showed AI Overviews just 13.1% of the time. On July 1, 2026, only 5 of 98 usable brand-name results had one. Ahrefs says the numbers vastly increased at the start of September, rising from 16 to 42 brands around September 9, and 63 brands had one by September 30. Google has not said whether the rollout is finished.
Why This Matters for a $1M-$10M Company
Your Own Name No Longer Guarantees the Top Spot
Ahrefs also tracked 100 major global brands by exact name. By September 30, 63 of them triggered an AI Overview, and 48 of those appeared in position one, above the brand’s own website. Earlier Ahrefs research found the top-ranking page gets 58% fewer clicks when an AI Overview is present. Those are large brands, so your numbers are unknown until you check, but the direction is clear.
Other Websites Are Telling Your Story
Among 57 branded AI Overviews with visible sources, Wikipedia was cited in 71.9%, YouTube in 38.6%, and LinkedIn in 22.8%. Facebook appeared in 10.5%. Only one competitor-owned site showed up. For a mid-sized company, your LinkedIn page, your YouTube videos, and third-party profiles can shape what a buyer reads before they ever click.
What the Data Does Not Show
These studies measure how often AI Overviews appear, not how many clicks you lose or whether your brand is cited. The samples are U.S. desktop only, and vendors define “branded” differently. DemandSphere, for example, recorded 90.48% on September 27 and 82.06% two days later, according to Search Engine Journal. Ahrefs warns that current levels may not hold, and Google has not announced a related change. Treat this as a prompt to check, not a reason to panic. A quick audit costs little, and the cost of ignoring a wrong or outdated summary of your business can be high.
Six Actions to Take This Quarter
1. Search Your Company Name and Read the Answer
Search your exact company name while signed out, on desktop and phone. Save a screenshot of the AI Overview, the pages it cites, and any competitors it mentions. Look for outdated facts, wrong services, or competitor names. Repeat weekly, since results moved sharply in September.
2. Check Click-Through Rate in Google Search Console
Compare click-through rate on your brand queries for September 8 to 14 against September 29 to October 5, as Semrush suggests. Stable rankings with falling click-through rate point to the AI Overview as the likely cause.
3. Make the Pages Google Trusts Match Your Website
Update your LinkedIn company page, Google Business Profile, and directory listings so your services, locations, and descriptions match your website exactly. Google also says to keep Business Profile information current.
4. Publish Current Video on Your Own YouTube Channel
Since YouTube is the second most cited source, official videos with clear titles and descriptions keep outdated third-party clips from filling the gap. Our video production services are built for this kind of asset.
5. Answer Buyer Questions in Plain Text on Your Site
Google says no special markup or AI-specific files are required to appear in AI Overviews. Standard SEO applies: crawlable pages, important information in text, and structured data that matches visible content. Write clear pages covering what you do, who you serve, and where.
6. Fix How You Measure Brand Traffic
Search Console’s generative AI performance report shows how often your links appear in AI Overviews, but brand mentions without links are not counted. In GA4, visits from AI Overviews land in Organic Search, so a quiet dip in brand traffic can hide there. Note the date you start tracking and compare against it.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a branded search?
A branded search includes a company or product name, such as “Acme Plumbing reviews.” People usually run these when they already know you and are close to choosing, which makes them valuable.
Do AI Overviews on my brand name mean I will lose customers?
Not necessarily. The studies measure how often AI Overviews appear, not lost clicks. Check Google Search Console for falling click-through rate on brand queries while rankings hold steady.
How do I see what Google says about my business?
Search your exact company name while signed out. Note the AI Overview text, the cited pages, and any competitors. Save a screenshot and repeat weekly to spot changes.
Which sites does Google cite most for brand searches?
In the Ahrefs sample, Wikipedia led at 71.9%, then YouTube at 38.6% and LinkedIn at 22.8%. Competitor-owned sites almost never appeared.
