Google AI Max Migration: What Owners Should Check
What Actually Changed in Your Account
If you run Google Ads, something changed this month whether you approved it or not.
On August 3, 2026, Google stopped allowing anyone to create new campaign-level broad match configurations or legacy automatically created assets across the Google Ads interface, Ads Editor, and the API. Then, starting September 1, Google began automatically upgrading Search campaigns that used either of those features to AI Max. The rollout runs gradually through September 30.
Google says campaigns are migrated in place using equivalent AI Max settings, and that existing brand inclusions and exclusions carry over automatically. The details matter more than that summary.
According to Google’s own developer documentation, the defaults after migration are not identical across campaign types. Campaigns that used campaign-level broad match come out with text customization opted out, final URL expansion opted out, and search term matching turned on. Campaigns that used standalone automatically created assets come out with text customization opted in, final URL expansion opted out, and search term matching turned on.
Read that second one again. If your account used automatically created assets, Google now has permission to rewrite your ad copy by default.
Dynamic Search Ads get a reprieve. Those do not migrate until February 1 through 28, 2027, though Google started showing in-account notices this month encouraging a voluntary move.
Why This Is Bigger Than a Typical Settings Change
AI Max is not a new campaign type. It is a layer that changes how your existing campaigns match to searches.
The mechanical change is significant: AI Max effectively treats all of your keywords as broad match, even if you deliberately built the account on exact and phrase match. Brad Geddes of Adalysis, who has published some of the most detailed independent testing on this, notes that when you do not have a broad match version of a keyword, Google assigns the AI Max data to your phrase or exact match keyword instead. You lose the ability to evaluate how each match type is performing.
Google’s pitch is straightforward. Advertisers who activate AI Max typically see 14 percent more conversions or conversion value at a similar cost per acquisition or return on ad spend, and campaigns built mostly on exact and phrase keywords see a typical lift closer to 27 percent.
Independent results are less tidy. An analysis covering more than 250 campaigns found a median revenue lift of 13 percent, but a median cost per acquisition increase of 16 percent, with return on ad spend swinging from plus 42 percent to minus 35 percent depending on the campaign.
Here is the part that should concern any owner reviewing a report from an agency or an in-house marketer. Geddes found that AI Max often shows for the same queries your exact and phrase match keywords were already winning, then takes credit for those conversions in the AI Max reporting line. The AI Max totals in your account are not automatically incremental gains. Some of that performance was already yours.
The Five-Step Audit to Run This Week
Frontload this work now, while September spend is still recoverable.
1. Confirm whether you were migrated
Check your Google Ads notifications and campaign settings for AI Max toggles you did not turn on. If your Search campaigns used campaign-level broad match or automatically created assets this year, assume you were included.
2. Filter your search terms report by AI Max
Your search terms report now includes a match type column. Filter to AI Max and review those totals separately. Three patterns show up consistently: brand terms matching to non-brand searches, non-brand terms matching to competitor searches, and brand terms matching to competitor searches.
3. Rebuild your negative keyword lists
Negative keywords are applied before AI expansion logic runs, which makes them your strongest remaining lever. Build out competitor names, off-topic terms, and any query pattern that has historically wasted money. Brand inclusions and exclusions in campaign settings help, but Geddes reports that misspellings and word variations frequently slip past brand filters, so negatives still carry the load.
4. Lock down final URL expansion
Final URL expansion defaults to off after migration, which is good news. Verify it anyway. If it is on, Google can route paid traffic to any page it considers relevant, including your blog, FAQs, support pages, and old landing page tests still live on your domain. Those pages usually have no conversion tracking and no offer.
5. Check text customization if you had automatically created assets
This is the one default that flipped toward automation. If text customization is opted in, review what Google is generating against your actual positioning and pricing before it runs another week.
When AI Max Is Probably the Wrong Fit
AI Max is not a scam, and it is not a universal win either. Test it carefully if any of these describe your account.
You have already tested broad match and it did not work. You run mostly exact and phrase match keywords and you are losing impression share to budget limits, because AI Max can reallocate budget away from your best keywords toward weaker terms. Or you simply do not want Google rewriting your copy and choosing your landing pages, in which case adding a few broad match keywords gives you the reach without handing over the rest.
Microsoft Is Headed the Same Direction
Microsoft Advertising made its own AI Max generally available across every advertiser account worldwide on August 19, 2026, with the same three capabilities: expanded search term matching, AI-generated text customization, and URL expansion for landing page routing.
Microsoft is also tightening bid controls. Starting October 1, the Max CPC setting will no longer be available when creating new non-portfolio campaigns using Maximize Conversions, Maximize Conversion Value, or Maximize Clicks. Campaigns created before that date keep the setting.
What This Means for Your Quarter
The strategic read is simple. Both major search platforms are removing the manual controls that let a careful operator outperform a lazy one, and replacing them with automation plus a smaller set of guardrails.
That changes where your marketing time is worth spending. Keyword-level micromanagement matters less. Three things matter more: the quality of your conversion tracking, because the automation optimizes toward whatever you tell it to value, the discipline of your weekly search term and negative keyword review, and the strength of your offer and landing page, because those are the variables you still fully control. This is the same logic behind the frameworks we publish.
For owners of companies in the one million to ten million dollar range, the practical risk is not that AI Max performs badly. It is that nobody is watching closely enough to tell the difference between a real lift and a reattributed one.
That is the gap an outside operator closes. Owners who want senior marketing judgment without a full-time hire use our CMO solution, and owners who want the execution handled look at our digital marketing packages.

Frequently Asked Questions
Did Google automatically turn on AI Max for my Search campaigns?
If your Search campaigns used campaign-level broad match or standalone automatically created assets, yes. Google began automatically upgrading those campaigns to AI Max on September 1, 2026, and rolled the change out gradually through September 30. Google says campaigns were migrated in place using equivalent AI Max settings, and that existing brand inclusions and exclusions carried over.
What is the difference between AI Max and Performance Max?
Performance Max is a separate campaign type that runs across Google inventory including YouTube, Display, and Shopping. AI Max is not a campaign type at all. It is a set of features layered onto your existing Search campaigns: expanded search term matching, AI text customization, and final URL expansion.
Can I turn AI Max off after the migration?
You can toggle individual AI Max features such as text customization and final URL expansion inside campaign settings, and you can still control reach with negative keywords, brand exclusions, and URL exclusions. What you cannot do is rebuild the old structures. Google blocked the creation of new campaign-level broad match configurations and legacy automatically created assets on August 3, 2026.
Does AI Max really deliver 14 percent more conversions?
Google reports a typical lift of 14 percent more conversions or conversion value at a similar cost per acquisition or return on ad spend, rising to roughly 27 percent for accounts built mostly on exact and phrase keywords. Independent testing across more than 250 campaigns found a median revenue lift of 13 percent alongside a median cost per acquisition increase of 16 percent, with return on ad spend ranging from plus 42 percent to minus 35 percent.
What should I check first in my Google Ads account this week?
Start with the search terms report filtered to the AI Max match type, then confirm that final URL expansion is off and that text customization matches your intent. After that, rebuild your negative keyword lists, because negatives are applied before AI expansion logic runs and remain your strongest lever over where budget goes.
